Buttercream or Frosting?

At Flying Monkey Bakery we strive to make fresh and delicious from scratch baked goods each and every day. We’re not a simple cupcakery or a cookie shop, we’re a full service bakery with a huge menu and loads of possibilities for custom work created just for you and your event. We’re unique amongst bakeries and aim to be innovative, forward thinking and are always trying to improve our products and seasonal flavor combinations. Regardless of our commitment to quality and fresh ingredients, it’s still hard for some to embrace a product that isn’t loaded with sugar, corn syrup or vegetable shortening (ick!!!).

The best example of our commitment to quality ingredients and recipes is our delicious buttercream. Most people in the U.S. grew up eating frosting or “American Buttercream” on their cakes. It’s a simple recipe containing butter or margarine, confectioner’s sugar, vanilla and a little milk or cream to bring it to a spreading consistency. It’s VERY sweet, grainy in the mouth, but holds up at room temperature. Most bakeries in the area make American Buttercream frosting and unfortunately, some don’t even use real butter (the nerve!!).

Here’s how Flying Monkey Bakery is different: We make a Swiss Buttercream for our cakes and cupcakes using only real, natural ingredients! Swiss Buttercream is smooth, not grainy at all, and only minimally sweet, allowing the flavors of the vanilla and butter to shine through the sugar. Our buttercream is made by cooking egg whites and sugar together, whipping them into a meringue and then slowly adding only real BUTTER and vanilla until the mixture is smooth and thick. The taste is sophisticated and buttery not overwhelmed by sugar or fake butter flavor. We stand behind our buttercream and want you to know that there is more to a good cupcake or cake then just loads of sugar and a pretty topper. Our ingredients are pure and natural as well as entirely edible. No icky sticky fondant or unappetizing sugar flowers make their way on to our pastries.

All of our delicious cupcakes and cakes are frosted with various flavors of our Swiss Buttercream made with only the freshest eggs, butter, and Singing Dog Vanilla Extract and Paste.

If a super sweet American Buttercream is more suited to your palate, we suggest you try one of our whoopie pies, they’re cake sandwiches filled with an American style Cream Cheese frosting, again using only real butter, cream cheese, and vanilla.

Hunk of Burning Love

My Elvis cake has turned out to be quite a popular dessert combination. Years ago, while baking for A Full Plate, I wanted to come up with a dessert that celebrated a random holiday in January. Elvis’ Birthday seemed appropriate as any other day, and thus the banana chocolate chip cake with peanut butter frosting was born. It’s been a hit since day one, and really, who wouldn’t enjoy the combination of sweet bananas, salty peanut butter and a little interest from a smattering of chocolate throughout the cake?

At Flying Monkey Bakery in Reading Terminal Market you can order a whole cake to pick up for your party or other celebration with just 48 hours notice ($40). If you need a fix sooner than that, we often turn the flavors of this cake into a whoopie pie aptly called The Elvis. We also deliver this cake to A Full Plate Cafe located on Liberties Walk in Northern Liberties, where they sell it by the slice or you can visit Jack McDavid’s famous Down Home Diner located on 12th and Filbert inside Reading Terminal Market for a taste.

Summer Cocktail Cakes

With the heat beating down on Philadelphia, you’re probably craving ice cream, gelato or Italian ice from one of the many purveyors of frosty treats across town. Or maybe you’re cooling off with cocktails mixed up with plenty of cold ice! At the Flying Monkey, we’re celebrating summer with our miniature boozy pound cakes. Try the Dark & Stormy, pictured below. It’s a dense, buttery poundcake spiked with crystallized ginger and local spirit Sailor Jerry Rum, then dipped in a rum lime glaze. They’re spicy and sweet, and available everyday for just $3.

We love to bake with booze, so check out our Arnold Palmer miniature pound cakes as well as our Margarita, Mojito, Tequila Sunrise, Strawberry Daiquiri, Bellini, and Champagne cupcakes.

Heat Up the Night – Valentine to the Market

Reading Terminal Market is gearing up for a special night, Heat Up the Night Valentine to the Market! The night is filled with dining, dancing, drinking, celebrity chefs and guests and live entertainment on three stages. Valentine to the Market is a gala event to raise funds for the Reading Terminal Market Preservation Fund and will be used to preserve and enhance the historic Reading Terminal Market for future generations.

The event is rain, snow or shine on Saturday, February 26th. Most merchants are either attending the event or providing nibbles for the evening, and you can attend, too! Tickets are still available online at Party Tickets Online

At The Flying Monkey, we’re donating some of our signature goodies to the VIP gift bags and our stall will be open for the dessert and dance party, where we’ll be serving mini whoopie pies, mini cupcakes and our delicious cake truffles. Hope to see you there!

Lunches @ Reading Terminal Market

I have a terrible problem every time I fail to bring my lunch to work, where should I eat? I know that I’m spoiled rotten working in Reading Terminal Market with so many great choices for lunch, but it’s a hard decision unless I have a particular taste for something specific.

I hope to find the time to do a series of posts, (not reviews!) about my lunch experiences working in one of the greatest public markets in the country. All of the merchants at Reading Terminal Market are my colleagues and friends and therefore what I have to say here about their offerings should be considered nothing more than me singing the praises of my fellow merchants.

So, amongst all the choices, who is first? The new kid on the block before I was the new kid on the block, Beck’s Cajun Cafe.

Bill Beck is the chef/owner of this popular Cajun eatery just one aisle off of center court. A few vegetarian options are available every day, but this place is really for those who get excited about meat (Alligator Sausage!!) Beck’s also does a great job of honoring traditional recipes while infusing creative twists.

Behold, the Trainwreck:
Beck's Train Wreck
The po’boys are great, but if Beck’s has a signature sandwich, the Trainwreck is it. It’s a cheesesteak with the addition of Andouille sausage, salami, cheese, onions and some of their homemade Creole mayonnaise.

Three of us split this for lunch one day and couldn’t finish it despite the fact it was delicious, it’s just that big.

Other Order Worthy Menu Items: Bread Pudding with Pears and Whiskey Sauce, Shrimp Po’boy, Muffaletta, Alligator Gumbo, Any of the Breakfast options

Welcome!

As of October 1st, The Flying Monkey is under new ownership.

The location and the name are the same, but all the sweets have undergone a major flavor overhaul. All of the recipes are new and much improved! Fresh and seasonal ingredients are now the star of the show. We make delicious whoopie pies, cupcakes and cakes in a variety of fun and seasonal flavors. Additionally, we have a creative array of brownies, blondies and bars.

Pumpple Cake

One of the major innovations of the new ownership is our Pumpple Cake. We started making this big beautiful hybrid cake/pie in early October, just a week or so after I took over and we’ve been selling out daily ever since. The national press has been all over the Pumpple cake. Our cake/pie hybrid has made television appearances on NBC’s Today Show, Food Network’s Outrageous Food and The Rachael Ray Show. We’re honored to receive the press and are glad so many folks have come down to the bakery for a slice since seeing our mammoth confection on TV.

We hope to keep this blog updated with new items we have available at the Flying Monkey as well as news and updates about our infamous Pumpple Cake.

If you’ve had a not so great experience in the past with The Flying Monkey we urge you to try us again. It’s a completely different bakery than you’ve seen in years past. We’re sure you’ll love the new versions of our goodies as much as we do.
